The McLean Highlanders defeated the WT Woodson
Cavaliers on Wednesday, May 15th by the score of 11-5. McLean
rebounded from an early 2-0 deficit in the top of the 1st inning
by scoring six runs in the bottom of the first, marked by Riley Beiro’s
leadoff solo home run. Every Highlander in the starting lineup got at least
one base hit in the effort. McLean played one of their best games of the
year, rebounding from two consecutive losses to close out the regular
season, including a 5-1 loss just a week earlier to Woodson.Sean
Fitzgerald earned with win for McLean by going five innings and striking out
eight Cavalier hitters. Quinn Pippin, Billy Heberton, and Tim Ferry
combined to pitch the final three frames for McLean.
On Friday, May 17th, the Highlanders faced top-seeded Stone
Bridge in the Liberty District semi-final game at Madison High School.
Denis Buckley and Stone Bridge’s Tyler Basso both pitched brilliantly,
locking each team into an exciting pitcher’s duel. Stone Bridge plated a
run in the first inning and a run in the 6th to eek out a 2-0 win
over McLean and advance to the district championship game. Buckley hurled
his 2nd complete game of the year for the Highlanders, allowing
just four hits on the night. McLean threatened to score multiple times
during the contest, but Basso effectively kept the Highlanders from coming
up with the big hit. David Roffman, Erik Payne, Brett Bleiweis, and Kendall
Wilkins all had base hits for the Highlanders.
With their performance in district tournament play, the Highlanders
earned the Liberty District’s #4 seed in the Northern Region tournament.
McLean will travel to Lake Braddock Secondary School on Friday, May 23rd
to take on the Lake Braddock Bruins in the first round of the Northern
Region tournament. First pitch is set for 7:00 PM.
